This newly constructed guest casita and multi-bay carriage garage was designed by SPIRAL ARCHITECTS to complement an existing Scottsdale estate residence nestled in the Sonoran foothills. Blending seamlessly with the original home, the structure features mortar-washed stone cladding, arched wood carriage-style garage doors, and exposed reclaimed beams.

Organically set into the natural slope of the hillside, the building’s placement reflects a hallmark of vernacular Provençal architecture — structures that appear almost grown from the land, rather than placed upon it. This sensitivity to topography not only minimizes visual impact but enhances thermal performance and creates a natural sense of privacy and shelter.

The composition was also inspired by the irregular, densely massed forms found at the entry to small Provençal villages, where buildings adapt to the angles of ancient roads worn into the landscape over centuries. That influence is evident in the building’s compound massing and highly-articulated floor plan, which feel both timeless and site-specific.

Inside, the casita includes antique French fireplaces, steel sash windows and doors, and vaulted plaster ceilings. Interior finishes evoke historic European charm, layered with rustic desert textures and vintage lighting. A second-story loggia offers a private sitting space overlooking the surrounding desert landscape.

The garage takes on the character of an authentic carriage house, complete with a bespoke motorized-hinge system for its doors and arched plaster barrel vaults. Patinated finishes, weathered stonework, and architectural salvage materials throughout reinforce a timeless, rustic aesthetic rooted in regional tradition.
