Glaus Residence: Adobe Legacy is a landmark restoration project located in the geographic and historical heart of Paradise Valley, Arizona. Spiral Architects was honored to work with the homeowner to sensitively restore and renovate this 1931 adobe estate — a structure deeply connected to the founding of the town itself.
Originally commissioned by Louise E. Glaus and designed by renowned Arizona architect Robert S. Evans — known for the Jokake Inn and Rose Eisendrath House — the residence was built by Evans’ brother-in-law, Neil Gates, with adobe block laid by early Paradise Valley developer Duncan MacDonald. This home stands as a rare surviving example of early Arizona adobe residential architecture.
In later decades, noted regional architect Bennie Gonzales made additions and alterations, including a guest casita, garage, and modifications to the original fenestration, loggia, and interior arches. His efforts brought a mid-century interpretation to the home, but removed many original 1930s features in the process.
Spiral Architects’ restoration approach sought to preserve and celebrate the structure’s authentic character while integrating modern functionality. Period-appropriate exterior stucco was developed, missing loggia arches were rebuilt, and original window openings were restored using a blend of steel sash and aluminum-clad wood windows. Inside, concealed architectural elements were uncovered — including the original tongue-and-groove wood deck and beamed ceiling in the living room — and new millwork and finishes were carefully designed to reflect the era, using archival photos and drawings from Evans’ portfolio.
The completed home honors its adobe legacy while providing comfortable, contemporary living. This project has received multiple honors:
2017 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award (State of Arizona SHPO & Arizona Preservation Foundation)
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2021) as the Glaus House
Officially designated a historic property by the Town of Paradise Valley (2024)
