Drawing inspiration from the Arizona Territorial architecture of 1885–1920, this custom Gilbert residence offers an authentic alternative to the ubiquitous modern farmhouse trends common throughout the Phoenix metro area. Rather than adopting national design clichés like stark white board-and-batten or steep black roofs, SPIRAL ARCHITECTS looked to regional traditions, time-tested materials, and Sonoran climate responses to create an enduring home rich in patina.

Our clients requested a comfortable “farmhouse feel” for a property where they had happily lived for three decades and raised their family. In response, the design pulls from historical vernacular precedents across central and southern Arizona: deep metal-roofed porches wrapping the main living levels, thick three-coat lime plaster walls, and deep-set double-hung window assemblies that carefully balance natural light and shade. Steeply pitched cedar shake roofs crown the conditioned living spaces, all set atop a authentic lava rock-clad foundation reminiscent of historic homes in Tucson’s oldest neighborhoods and period ranches near the border.

The floor plan is anchored by on-axis fireplaces in the great room and kitchen, creating natural divisions between the primary suite, guest quarters, and utility spaces. In the two-story great room, a dramatic open stair ascends to a generously scaled upper office, full bath, and private balcony overlooking the front grounds.

Across the pool, a strongly massed guest casita—known as “The Barn”—provides bunkhouse-style sleeping quarters, a full bath, and a comfortable sitting area. A covered outdoor pool porch featuring its own lava rock fireplace and a compact fitness room completes the secondary structure.

To unify the expanded estate, the owners’ existing flat-roof garage was redesigned with a matching pitched roofline and vertically proportioned windows. A lava rock-clad potting shed was inserted between the garage and main residence—serving as an informal “back front door” that connects seamlessly to the pool, backyard, and north-facing dining porch. This Arizona Territorial residence demonstrates how regional architectural traditions offer a deeply personal, climate-responsive, and enduring alternative to contemporary trends.
